    TRACING ORIGINALS

    in QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

I'm very new to Miniature Painting and just doing the Introductory course with Vaishali.

I'd really like to use this painting of Seemorgh and Zaal as my chosen image to reproduce and learn from, but am struggling to find an image that is high enough resolution to print in A4 size. The only images I have found become so pixelated that I can't trace them. Any tips on where to find high quality images? Or, does anyone know the name of the painter of this so I can do a more specifc search of museum catalogues? I can't seem to find a name.

I will go on to order some books with miniature paintings but postage to Australia can take over three weeks at the moment so it's not an immediate option.

    Thanks in advance!

    Sarah

Hello! This image is a big one! hope it works out for you! Such a wonderful painting! There are several options for download size and the largest one gives really good detail! Have fun and my very best regards, Alison

Hi Sarah, that's a great choice and one of my favourites - I always think the colours look like Avatar colours (from the film Avatar), those lush blues and malachite greens. It's from the Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp (I refer to this a lot!) and I recommend you take a small section of it to work from rather than the whole entire thing, just to begin with. Best of luck and see you soon!

Thanks Vaishali! I love the colours, they are absolutely stunning! Malachite is one of my favourites, although I currently only have a Kuretake Gansai pan. It would be nice to try mixing real pigment one day. I also really enjoyed reading about the story of Seemorgh and Zaal. I particularly wanted to paint rocks and trees, and was looking for something featuring a leopard so it was also a great fit for that. I like the tiny hint of cloud at the top corner too. I remember you saying people might be a bit of a challenge - I was thinking of just focusing on the top half of this painting to leave out the figures at the bottom, and hoping that painting Zaal might be achieveable being just skin tone. I will give it my best shot!
