It also features on old Hong Kong coins (which I think are now worth something!) - their scalloped edges used to remind me of the flower petals themselves which are softly scalloped

And it's the symbol on the Hong Kong flag. This is a bit of clever graphic design: The flowers contain the 5 stars of the Chinese flag, as Hong Kong was reverting back to China, but they are contained within the motif of a dynamic 5-petalled flower - the bauhinia, symbol of Hong Kong, always moving, always changing, like the pentagonal geometry of number 5 itself. 5 alive!
