An anatomical lift the flap book and painted layers of the Wheel of Life
Starts 4 October | £399 | Online
The Subtle body, the Ayurvedic body, the bhavachakra wheel of life. We'll explore these with special lift-the-flaps - keeping the foray into moveable books. There was a great show at the Wellcome Collection in London on the Ayurvedic body, and yogic body. We'll also explore an experimental painted layers style wheel of life. The wheel of life is complex, and possibly the oldest symbol in Buddhism (even older than the image of Buddha himself) so we'll simplify it to understand its basic components. For this class you'll need access to a printer or photocopier. We'll be printing out in black and white only so no need for a colour printer.
I made a lift-the-flap anatomical page as a child in school in Hong Kong as part of my Year 2/Year 3 projects books. We did this as a class. I was very proud of myself that I'd positioned the baby in the womb face down, ready to come out, and my teacher was impressed that I knew about that (thanks to my mother of course). I like the idea of healing and doctors; I think of myself as a GP artist ('general practice artist')!
Since these are book classes, we will also be developing our bookmaking skills and learning new book cover techniques with the leather gradually. This is also a slightly bigger book than previous classes and we will be getting bigger with time too.
Class includes a bespoke handmade leather envelope-flap cover to paint and free postage to anywhere in the world. Sent separately depending on production schedules. Make your own library of handmade Islamic books!
