A beautiful series featuring and painting women - we've been building up to this. May is a gentle green-blue lady, and the lady with the lamp. I've chosen ladies in different figural positions to get a comprehensive view, and the variety of activities they were engaged in, including having fun on swings, combing their long and beautiful hair, thinking and gazing, running from the monsoon, sniffing flowers, waiting for lovers and scattering fireworks. There are actual portraits of known ladies (princesses such as Nur Jahan and Jahanara) including the famous turquoise lady. I'm really excited about this series as a counterpart to the heavily male faces of last year, and we bring it to a balanced close with a couple in love as a prelude to the Love series next year (love in all its forms).
A couple with fireworks to end the series and as a precursor to the Love series next year. It's also the festive season so fireworks are fun and appropriate. Note how in the second image the man has his arms tenderly around his love. Nowhere in the manuscript world but in Indian miniature painting do we see love this warm and intimate. Looking at these images, and the quiet calmness in their eyes, I really felt it. It is also the season of kindness and goodwill to all.
Upcoming sessions include: 2023 Love series next year JANUARY - love of another (male-female), and Khosrow and Shirin (falling in love via paintings) FEBRUARY - love of each other (same sex)
MARCH - love of dance
APRIL - love of wine and the Divine (Allegory of Drunkenness; the Beloved: Persian poetry)
