Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities
June 18 through September 26, 2021
https://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/shahzia-sikander Pakistani American artist Shahzia Sikander is internationally celebrated for bringing Indo-Persian miniature-painting traditions into dialogue with contemporary art practice. This exhibition tracks the first fifteen years of this artistic journey, from her groundbreaking deconstruction of miniature painting in Pakistan to the development of a new personal vocabulary at RISD, expanded explorations around identity as a Core fellow at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and her global outlook during her first years in New York. During this period, Sikander richly interrogated gender, sexuality, race, class, and history, creating open-ended narratives that have sustained her work as one of the most significant artists working today
@Alison Guest Shall we go? is anyone else in or around NYC??
@Alison Guest I am planning to go to the exhibition on 8/27 if you'd like to join (or if anyone else is near NYC!). Loving this video she made about her relationship with the miniature painting tradition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74ZqtCfkNkQ
The Shahzia Sikander talk is today! if anyone wants to join....it's at 12-1pm Boston time (5-6 pm London, 9-10 am Pacific) so just after @Vaishali Prazmari's MasterClass:
I hope you guys can meet up in real life and see this yes! Looks like it'll be a great show!
for those who are interested, she is also having an artist talk later this month: https://arttable.org/event/virtual-artist-talk-with-shahzia-sikander/
@Alison Guest I'm flexible. I am generally free to travel to NYC on Saturdays (kids go with husband to visit the in-laws) but I'm taking a Saturday morning class that starts in mid-September. It does get hot in NYC in the summer though, shall we keep an eye on the weather and see if there is a cool Saturday coming up in the next few months? I'm not sure how much the Morgan fills up.
YES @Nadia Madden! I am out east for the summer and was not planning to spend much time in the city and planned to see this in September when it is cooler and we're back in the city more. However, if it is too hard to wait, it is so totally understood! I would be so happy to make an exception for you! So either way, yes!!!! Soon or after September -- all good! I love her work and have really been looking forward to this! Thank you for thinking of this!
