Like the miniature Ottoman or Safavid Qu'rans which inspired these classes, we're going back to the beginning with miniature books. Some included falnama - books of omens - in them too and I will use the falnama as a starting point for my own demonstration. Of course, the printed versions of these books are popular even today but this class is a chance to make your very own handmade one. The content is up to you (religious or otherwise). These are rare manuscripts normally only found in museums and that command £10-30,000 at auction so this is also a rare and unique opportunity to make your own for a fraction of the price and customise your own content.
Since these are book classes, we will also be developing our bookmaking skills and learning new book cover techniques with the leather gradually. This is an unusual hexagonal shaped book with a coral/salmon colour leather cover, an authentic colour I've seen myself at museums. We'll make the book together in class and we will make the cover for you to complete. Due to the more complex, detailed and time-consuming nature of making the covers this will be a one-off class with a limited number of participants.
Class includes a bespoke handmade leather cover to paint and free postage to anywhere in the world. Sent separately depending on production schedules. Make your own library of handmade Islamic books!
